Games Doc - Pre Production

Image
Mind map for setting of game. Includes the genre and what type of game it would be. I was stuck between full Fantasy and Steampunk so i made ideas for both but was convinced to do the first one. Once my idea was picked i had to plan a full story, in my first draft of the story i had a basic plan of a evil king but decided to scrap that.  Here shows my first idea of the overall game. I had decided there would be a tower as well but needed a reason for them to climb it. It also shows another story idea that i also scrapped. My final idea came to me when i was watching Ice Age 2 and they all had to get on the "boat" to save themselves. So my final synopsis turned out like this "The Gods have threatened the life of every being in the Realm. You are one of the chosen heroes to complete the Tower of the Gods along with three others you must join together to fight the creatures of the tower and save the Realm!"  The next planning was the weapons

Reviewing Games - Dragon Quest IX and Splatoon

Image
This review of Dragon Quest IX and Splatoon will cover the style, mechanisms and life expectancy of the game along with other comparisons of other games like it. Firstly this version of Dragon Quest was released in 2009 so its really old but i am replaying it currently so that's why i'm writing about it. As expected of a old game its graphics and style are far behind today's current games but back in the day it was good quality and even now brings back some nostalgia. Although compare it to a game like Breath of the Wild it looks like it was made by a five old. However being an RPG it relies more on the plot than the looks to get the message and enjoyment across. Although nine year old me thought the style and quality was amazing once i replayed it i had forgotten how bad it actually was and even struggle to make out the characters when not in a cut-scene. Fast forward to 2012 when Level 5 one of the developers of Dragon Quest released a new and very similar game with

Procedures

The procedures of all games are basically who does what, when, where and how? Its the rules of what the players can do without being the rules. Additionally, digital wise its integrated within the controls. For example Marios procedures would be how to move and what button does what, it says nothing about how to win the game. Types of Procedures are: Starting Action - how to start the game like press play of roll the dice. progressing action - ongoing steps special action - game stake and conditional. Resolving Action - the step to end the game Comparing Procedures Snap - get 2 or more players, share cards between you, decide what order to go in, put cards in the middle until you get 2 cards put after each other Tic Tac Toe - get players, draw a grid, decide who is what symbol, take it in turns drawing symbol in boxes Chess - move the pieces towards opposite end of board. Football - get 11 players on each side, kick ball towards goal. LOZ - use the controls to move,

Game Player/ Buyer Types

For years games have been categorised by gender and age and due to how long this has gone on it has affected the statistics of what players buy and what percentage of each gender are playing games. These categories that players are put into can effect the statistics and therefore the game developers. Women are categorised as players who like adventure games with good plot and what some would consider boring. Whereas men are categorised as players who like hardcore games such as call of Duty and Halo. Although this is what game developers make it out to be like the players disagree with a survey that 91% of players asked if "women were biologically wired to like certain games" they all thought otherwise. Additionally 98% rejected the proposition of exclusively male targeted games. However, this can also be said for the younger generation who are both categorised by age and gender, both being put into a child friendly category as well with no violence. For younger girls y

Current Software Technologies

Image
There are many software's online that anyone can use to develop their own games. Although each one can only do so much they still contribute to the development. An example of both 3D and 2D application is Unity, arguably the most popular game development software. By signing up for Unity you have access to online tutorials, codes and assets. The software allows you user to download any assets for their chosen game weather in 2D or 3D  you have the option to switch instantly. Its perfect for game developers as its not very limited, unlike some software it may only help you in certain areas. Whereas, unity allows you to build your level using any asset you import and from there on you can add scripts to code whatever you want. Additionally no matter where you are into development it has the feature of letting you play the game to test it out. Once you've finished you can even render out your game as it comes with a real time rendering engine. Adding on, another example

Past, Present and Future of Gaming Platforms

(sorry Leigh i wrote a lot) Through out the years Videos games and consoles have developed, with each year they are improved greatly with new features added every time. But what is a Video game console? its a electronic device that is able to output a video signal or image to display a video game that one or more people are able to play. Back when they were first made they weren't not as advance as technology was still new and less popular as it is today. Arcade The first arcade machine was built in 1971 before home consoles were even made. The game it plays is apparently a one on one version of "Asteroids" without the debris. Shortly after the well known game today "Pong" was made in 1972, it was the first successful electronic "ping pong" video game.It proved to be popular but imitators held back the company from dominating the new market. Although today they have been switched out for hand held consoles they too have evolved. With motion c
